The form of the building was inspired by the spread of roots and the structural system is modeled after stems, leaves, and their arrangement. Service areas symbolize a tree trunk while the reveal of the columns above represent stems. Circular translucent glass panels are distributed above a clear glass roof to give the appearance of a canopy or the underside of a blooming flower. The reflections of these panels and their structural systems create shadows that mimic a forest. The exterior glass panels are equal in size to parastichy numbers, or the number of spirals on a flower. Patrons can reconnect with nature as they shop.

Champaign-Urbana’s Farmers’ Market is currently located in a parking lot. The new building is needed to allow for business during inclement weather. Taking inspiration from flowers, fruit trees, and vegetables sold at the market, I designed a space that incorporates nature in every facet.
